Honey!

Honey

There is a hige difference between raw, unpasteurized honey and processed, pasteurized honey. In raw honey you can find 27 minerals, 22 amino acids and 5000 live enzymes. When honey is pasteurized the heat destroys the antioxidants and kills the live enzymes that our bodies need. Raw honey will have a milky appearance and should be darker in color than the processed honey.
Pasteurized and processed honey is clearer when held up to the light and much lighter in color than raw honey.
Honey is sweeter than white refine sugar but it is still a carbohydrate no matter how you look at it. Honey contains 82 grams of carbohydrates and the same amount of white refined sugar would contain 100% carbohydrates!
Raw honey is an antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial. Raw honey contains niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, and B6. This naturally made syrup can aid in digestion, strengthen the immune system, eliminate allergies, stabilize blood pressure and is great for acne, skin conditions and injuries as well as burns. Raw honey can be put on infections and rashes as well to help speed the healing process. Raw honey is also an anti inflammatory so it can be used to relieve certain types of pain. using raw honey to calm the nerves and treat ulcers has no side effects like many drugs do. For using in seasonal allergies it is best to use local raw honey only for best results.
Manuka honey is made in New Zealand where pollution is very low and therefore it is rumored that this raw honey has greater antibacterial benefits for colds, sore throats, indigestion, stomach ulcers and acne.
There are many types and flavors of honey depending on where the bees are visiting. Orange Blossom honey which obviously comes from the bees primarily visiting orange blossoms is usually very light in color with a mild flavor of citrus. Wildflower raw honey gets its name due to the bees collecting through a variety of wild flowers and not just one type. Apiaries use this name especially when the bees are using an unknown source. Clover honey is the highest producer in the United States and varies in color depending on where it is produced.
Overall honey is an amazing sweetener with incredible healing and medicinal qualities.Do your reasearch and enjoy the gift from the bees of raw honey.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon

Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of the Cinnamomum tree and dates back to the Egyptian times. Cinnamon was considered a gift to the kings and has been mentioned in the bible quite often as medicine. Cinnamon is actually in the same family as Bay leaves and Avocados.
There are two main types of cinnamon. Cassia is the most common type of cinnamon found today in supermarkets. However, true cinnamon is Ceylon cinnamon.
There are many active compounds in cinnamon. The amazing smell and powerful health benefits are derived from the oil called cinnamaldehyde which contains an anticlotting action.
Cinnamon can stop the growth of bacteria and therefore qualifies as an antimicrobial. Because of this cinnamon would be of great benefit for people ridding their body of candida and yeast overgrowth.
Cinnamon would be great for diabetics because it slows down how fast the stomach empties which reduces the rise of blood sugar right after a meal. In type 2 diabetes cinnamon has been shown to improve the body's response to insulin. These studies were done using less than a half of a teaspoon per day.
Cinnamon has been proven to be a better antioxidant than ginger, licorice, nutmeg and even the chemicals BHA and BHT which is commonly used in cereals.
Research has proven that just smelling cinnamon improves cognition. In my opinion we should use this as an essential oil in our public school system. Can you imagine the great benefits our children would have with this? And without feeding them chemicals and drugs!!

There are so many ways to include cinnamon in your daily regiment. Cinnamon essential oil can be put in a diffuser especially when your children are doing homework! Mash some bananas on a piece of toast then sprinkle with cinnamon-call it banana pizza. How about a little honey and cinnamon on the toast too? I love to saute bananas in coconut oil and sprinkle them with lots of cinnamon. Warm some almond milk up and put a cinnamon stick in it and a little honey if you like it sweeter. Cinnamon is great in raw cookies or even the cooked kind, applesauce, fruit sauce, pancakes, squash, pumpkin, oatmeal, chicken, pizza with pineapples, avocado pudding and i have even heard it be used on popcorn!

Bananas, Oh My!!!

Bananas

Historians believe that bananas originated in Malaysia around 4000 years ago and spread to the Philippines and India. There is proof of them existing during the reign of Alexander the Great in 327BC. Once again, just like Ginger the Arabs enabled bananas to be brought to other countries through the traders and that's when they came to the Americas.  Because of the fragile nature of the banana they were only consumed by coastal residence as they were closest to the docks where trading occurred. When refrigerators were invented the banana became more popular across the country as storage was no longer an issue.
Banana plants grow to be anywhere from 10 to 25 feet tall bearing from 50 to 150 bananas in groups of 10 to 25 bananas called hands. There are hundreds of varieties of bananas but only two main types-sweet and plantain. They also come in a variety of colors other than just yellow.
Sweet bananas can be eaten raw or cooked but plantains are eaten cooked as they are considered more of a vegetable than a fruit and contain more starch than the sweet banana plus their beta-carotene levels are higher.
Bananas a filling and can help with dieting with only about 90 calories each, keep your bowels regular, help to regulate heart rhythm and contain nutrients for eye health. Since half the fiber in the banana is soluble fiber it can slow the digestion down which makes you feel full longer so consuming a banana before a meal can help curb the appetite and hunger.

Since bananas are high in potassium (400mg or so) they are great for regulating high blood pressure, leveling out electrolytes, feeding the brain, protection against atherosclerosis. They are low on the glycemic index with about 14-15 grams of sugar which is  a bonus for diabetics. Bananas are also high in bifidobacteria which will help with gastrointestinal issues. I have also heard the if you rub your teeth with the inside portion of the peel it can whiten your teeth.

New Use for Coconut Oil

I discovered a new use for coconut oil!!! I bit the inside of my cheek a few days ago! It wasn't healing very quickly - more than likely due to me re-biting (is that a word?) it because it was swollen. Anyways, I have coconut oil with peppermint essential oil in my bathroom for brushing my teeth. I swished that like oil pulling twice yesterday and last night it felt better and this morning its almost gone!! WooHoo!! Yay me!! SO if you should bit the inside of your mouth now you know-Coconut Oil swish to the rescue!!!

Ginger Rhizome

Ginger has been used throughout history in many areas of the world. The use of ginger began as far back as 5000 years ago in south east Asia. There is also evidence of its use by the Romans as well. When the Arabs took control of the spice trade ginger began to reach more countries and its popularity really began to increase. At one point in history ginger became quite valuable and expensive. One pound of ginger was equivalent in trade to one whole live sheep.
Ginger root is not actually even a root. It is a rhizome. The ginger plant itself can be eaten as well as the leaves. The rhizomes are grown in tropical climates throughout the world. Depending on what the ginger will be used for is when it is harvested. For a mild flavor ginger is harvested as early as five months of growth. The most common intensity of flavor and growth is harvested at about seven or eight months of growth. When using in making essential oils and wanting super intensity harvesting eight months a beyond is best.
Ginger is best known for its medicinal qualities for digestion issues. Ginger has been known to aid in everything from colitis, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, cramps, nausea, motion sickness, diarrhea, gas, bloating and flatulence. Ginger has also been widely used to help reduce inflammation in arthritis and other forms of joint problems to help ease the pain and discomfort caused by these diseases. SInce ginger is known to stimulate circulation using it for the prevention of blood clots is also a good way to utilize it. Ginger has been known to aid in the reduction of fevers, lower cholesterol, as a decongestant and an antihistamine as well. SInce ginger has been known to have antioxidant properties it has also been used to help protect against Alzheimer's and cancer including ovarian, pancreatic, and breast due to its ability to stop the growth of abnormal cells.

Ginger is a very versatile rhizome and can made into tea through an infusion, microplaned onto bananas, used with maple syrup and apple cider vinegar to make Switchel, made into essential oil, pills, tinctures, powder for use in pumpkin pie or squash, infused into honey or syrup for pancakes.

Wheatgrass Juice

Wheat Grass

In the 1930’s wheatgrass became well known when Charles F. Schnabel documented its amazing nutritional value after many long studies of it. Then between the 1930’s and 1950s a large volume of research was being conducted by other health professionals like medical doctors, scientists and hospitals.
Two ounces of wheatgrass juice is the nutritional equivalent of five pounds of the best raw organic vegetables.
You can find twice the amount of Vitamin A in wheat grass as carrots and wheat grass is higher in Vitamin C than an orange! It contains all of the B vitamins, as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium in a perfectly balanced ratio. Wheatgrass is also a complete protein that supplies all of the essential amino acids. In fact wheat grass has about 20% of its total calories as proteins. However the proteins from wheat grass are called poly peptides, which are simpler and shorter chains of amino acid. This enables the body to use them more efficiently in the body.
A study done by the Hippocrates Institute and MIT revealed that powdered wheat grass is only 2% as effective as fresh.
Because the wheat grass begins to oxidize soon after the wheat grass is juiced it should be consumed within 15 minutes or less when it is juiced in order to gain full benefit from it..
Wheat grass contains high levels of chlorophyll which means that it contains high levels of oxygen. The chlorophyll is created from the sun so drinking wheat grass is like drinking liquid sunshine! More oxygen going to the blood stream means a healthier body. More oxygen going to the brain means not only a healthier brain but thinking clearer, processing information easier, and having balance in the brain and body. This also in turn can improve upon blood sugar problems like diabetes, help to prevent tooth decay, speed up the healing of injuries, helps to prevent bacterial infections, removes heavy metal poisoning, helps to cleanse the liver,  improves digestion, great for blood pressure and to lower cholesterol, great for UTIs and infections in the urethra, bladder or prostate, kidney stones, respiratory conditions, sore throats, gout, colitis, joint pain, and skin conditions. Wheat grass has been used for the treatment of all cancers as well as arthritis.

Wheat grass has been studied and has been proven that it kills bacterial infections, works as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory in the body. I could go on and on with the great uses of wheatgrass. I grow it in my home and use it almost every day.

Holistic Approach to Ear Infections

Childhood ear infections have been a problem for as long as I can remember. Back in the 1990’s it was the second most common illness among children with over $3.5 billion dollars a year being spent on doctors visits concerning ear infections. There are natural methods that may be used alone, under supervision of a Naturopath or in conjunction with medically prescribed drugs.
One of the first things to be used when there is a symptom of an ear infection would be Garlic/Mullein Oil. This can be purchased through a local health food store or prepared in your kitchen. Simply combine approximately one tablespoon of minced fresh organic garlic with one tablespoon of Mullein flowers with three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. If Mullein flowers cannot be located then only use two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Put lid on jar and allow to stand in a warm but not hot area for at least 24 hours. Four to five drops of warmed oil can be placed in each ear several times a day. Due to the sulfur-containing amino acid called alliin in garlic it is considered a probiotic and has been known to kill infections and speed the healing of wounds.
Garlic, among other herbs such as echinacea, astragalus and even shiitake can be used internally to boost the immune system and assist the body in fighting infection. These products can be found in your local health food store as well as super markets. They come in many forms including tea, capsule and tincture. A tincture is a liquid solution that has gone through a maceration process, whereas the chemical constituents of the herb has been drawn out and into the solution. The herbs are then discarded and the remaining solution becomes the tincture. For children, tinctures appear to be the best form as they do come in orange and strawberry flavors and can be placed in the child's beverage as well as directly in the mouth.
Certain things should be avoided during an ear infection. Dairy products and sugar have been known to cause excess mucous in the system and may produce more of a problem. Cold air or a cold breeze may cause more pain to the affected area and therefore when outdoors a hat should be worn to cover the ears. Elevating the child's head during sleep may also help. This can be done by placing a small soft-covered book under the feet of the head of the bed. This angle doesn't seem like much it will allow the fluid to drain from the undeveloped eustachian tube in the ear.
Although these answers appear rather simple, they have been known to give excellent results. These modalities are natural and non-invasive. They help to promote the bodies already vibrant  healing ability and encourage health. Many parents are faced with this chronic problem and are willing to try many things. It is best to investigate all claims of cure or healing thoroughly and when in doubt speak to your practitioner.

Spice it up a bit!

I have never been a big fan of spicy foods but cayenne is so good for you in so many ways I wanted to try it for breakfast.  I actually like it.  The goat cheese helps tame it a bit.
Sautéed veggies with turmeric and cayenne Yosef with an egg. Topped with cilantro pesto (helps detox heavy metal poisoning) then some goat cheese and dollops of raw garlic.  Side of quinoa with fermented veggies.  Yummy!

Bach Flower Therapy

Dr. Bach’s Flower Essences

In holistic medicine, people are trained to view the body as an entire entity: physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally.  Naturopaths believe that if a person does not feel well physically then it affects the person mentally, spiritually and emotionally as well.
A therapy most commonly used by naturopaths and many other holistic practitioners is Bach Flower Essences.
The 38 original flower essences were discovered by Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936). Dr. Bach M.B., B.S., D.P.H., was a bacteriologist and homeopathic practitioner. He was in tune with the medical theories of the ancient Greek Hippocrates. Like Samuel Hahnemann, Bach did not feel comfortable or approve of modern-day medical procedures that “destroyed or altered.” In 1930, Bach left his practice in search of a more natural way of healing. He spent the next six years of his life devoted to developing his flower essences.
Bach based his diagnosis on the soul of a person as well as on the personality. He felt that if the energy of certain feelings such as worry, apprehension, etc. were relieved, then the person would heal faster. Each plant that Bach chose was in tune with a certain personality type or quality. He felt that flower essence floods the negative soul with harmonious energy waves. The negative energy then melts away, like snow on a warm day. The gap between the soul and the personality is then reestablished and the person is able to heal more efficiently.
There are 38 flower essences and each pertains to a specific personality. They can be combined according to the individual but should not exceed five at one time. Flower essences are quite harmless to anyone at any age, even in large doses. One small bottle can make between 45 and 50 treatments. A treatment can be prepared by putting 2 to 3 drops in a cup of water and sipping the water throughout the day.
One particular remedy called “Rescue Remedy” is a combination of five essences. The purpose for this combination remedy is to nullify the person’s anguish, comfort them, reassure them and keep them calm. This remedy can be taken during the trip to the hospital in emergency situations. The flower essence combinations can be used for cranky and irritable children on both the child and the parent to sooth and calm both parties. It can also be given to a car accident victim until the ambulance arrives.
Rescue Remedy will keep the person calm and focused. The loss of a job or the news of a family member’s death is a sure sign for Rescue Remedy.
Bach Flower Essences can be used in combination with allopathic therapies as well as other naturopathic remedies safely, as there are no contraindications.  However, as with all naturopathic or holistic therapies, you should seek professional advice and research information thoroughly before using any new remedy.

The Medicinal Value of Raw Garlic

Allium sativum is the Latin term for garlic which is one of my most favorite medicinal plants. It has been used throughout history medicinally from as early as the Giza pyramids 5000 years ago to now. Hippocrates used garlic to treat respiratory problems, parasites, poor digestion and fatigue.
Garlic has also been used for bronchitis, hypertension, TB (tuberculosis), liver disorders, dysentery, flatulence, colic, intestinal worms, rheumatism, diabetes, fevers, cholesterol, heart disease, and different forms of cancers. The NIH (National Institute of Health) states that many of these claims are scientifically supported.
Sulfur compounds called Allicin found in raw garlic is what what gives it its medicinal properties. Heat reduces the anti-inflammatory effects of the sulfur compound and the medicinal quality drops so it is important to consume garlic in its raw state.
Not only does raw garlic taste fantastic and has amazing healing properties it is also a source of vitamins and minerals essential for the body like Manganese, B6, C, Selenium, Calcium, Copper, Potassium, Phosphorus, iron, and B1.
A 12 week study showed that colds were reduced by 63% with garlic compared to a placebo.  The length of a cold and symptoms were reduced by 70%. The cold symptoms lasted 5 days for the placebo group and 1.5 days for the garlic group.
There are many ways I have used or taught my clients and students to use garlic. If you or your child suffer with an ear infection or pain in the ear possibly due to an infection you can place garlic in the ear until you seek professional help. Simply peel the clove that you feel would be the appropriate size to fit in the ear very carefully using caution to not nick the clove. Then place it in the ear open end down towards the canal. DO NOT shove it in hard just place it gently into the open area.
The same idea works for sinus infections as well. Just peel the approximate size clove to fit in a nostril being very cautious to not nick the surface of the clove. Then place gently in the nostrils. Again DO NOT shove them up the nostrils. They will be slightly hanging out and look rather silly but it works. I know MANY clients and students that now swear by them. In fact I have one who uses it and her kids use to laugh at her but they are use to it now and it has become quite common when mom has a cold or sinus condition that she walk around the house with garlic hanging from her nose!
Another way to use garlic is as a suppository for yeast infections. Simply peel a large clove of garlic again being quite careful not to nick the surface of the clove. Then place it inside cheesecloth and tie a knot around it so the garlic remains in the cloth. Insert the garlic and cloth inside the vagina right before bedtime and sleep with it over night. When you get up in the morning remove it and you will be surprised how excellent it worked. Keep in mind there are other factors that must be addressed when dealing with a yeast infection but this is one component.
So now you know that eating raw garlic is really the best way to gain the medicinal benefits but the question I always get is just HOW to eat it! I love it in salsa or minced over a salad with fresh lemon and a pinch of salt. Putting inside fermented veggies or with an avocado on toast. I’m not into hot sauce but why not add a little zip to it with raw garlic?! On a teaspoon of honey would be easy to consume. My absolute favorite is on a cracker with goat cheese or on bread soaked with extra virgin olive oil. But really when all else fails mince it up, scopp a little on a spoon, put it in your mouth and swallow it with something (not hot) to drink. DONE! Make sure that you have food in your stomach before doing this as it is strong. I also don’t do large amounts but rather smaller amount more often.

Sesame Broccoli

I absolutely love creating new recipes. One of my favorite things to do is to have a friend buy random food and then I get to figure out what to do with it. I have come up with so many great recipes this way. My friend Bonnie just did this the other night and then she made me crepes which I had taught her to do a few years ago.  The "crepes" or GF and made with only a egg and Toffutti Cream Cheese and then filled with a carob avocado pudding then topped with fresh berries. OMG forgot just how delicious they are.  I posted a great recipe for Sesame Broccoli yesterday on my website at www.DrSharrie.com and tonight I plan on creating a recipe for raw Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Yummi

What do I drink? Really?!?! LOL

So it's very rare to see me without a mason jar of reverse osmosis water and ACV in it.  I get tired of just plain water sometimes so I have been known to create infused water or lemon water or simply just a blip of Apple Cider Vinegar in it.  Not only does this give variety and added great flavor but it ups my PH to keep me healthy. I don't usually drink much with my meals but when I do it will help with digestion and replenishing my gut flora as well.

I post a new recipe every week on FaceBook. They are usually very simple to make and require very few ingredients. Super nutritious with great flavor. This week is Hawaiian Bok Choy. Had a great time last year getting several interviews by Dick Daley. http://vp.telvue.com/preview?id=T00969&video=218392
Every monday I post a new recipe on my website. The recipes are usually very simple and easy to make with few ingredients. I want people to know and understand that eating healthy is super easy. And the flavor is amazing. My husband is not as health conscious as I am but sometimes tries what I create basically due to the fact that he is at a loss in the kitchen! This weeks recipe is one that he likes me to make over and over again! Eating healthy has so many benefits and its NOT difficult. The health benefits are fantastic and the energy is even better! Check out the recipe when you have time but don't wait too long because its only there for a week and then a new one comes up. www.DrSharrie.com   I invite you to ask questions here about food or health or whatever is on your mind that you feel I can answer for you.

Had an amazing day today. Worked for several hours in my husbands garage. It can be very scary going in a mans garage but I faced it like a trooper. Keep in mind I had a great friend there as a back up rescue in case the garage attempted to swallow me! Then went for a hike around Glen Lake (One of my absolute favorite places) with two of my favorite people. Came home had lunch and meditated in the sun afterwards. Doesn't get much better than that people!!! I've always wondered why I am so drawn to the lake. I believe its because I love to meditate as it has truly changed my life. Meditation done properly brings the brain wave activity to 7.83 Hz and both water and earth resonate at that same frequency-coincidence? I don't think so!!!

Visiting Daniel Sonntag in NYC

Last weekend I went to New York City to be with my very great friend Daniel Sonntag (Author of  Awakening the Creator) and spoiled him with some simple and delicious food. He was so funny when he was watching me. Asking questions and amazed at the speed of preparation and the incredible taste from such combinations.
